Telling Story With Off-Screen Sound

Taught By:

Kevin Senzaki

Description:

Kevin explains how off-screen sound (things we can hear, but aren't shown) can shape your story, and the ways you can use it to your advantage.

Lesson Plan

Put on your headphones, or turn up your speakers! Kevin talks about how off-screen sound (things we can hear, but aren't shown) can shape your story, and the ways you can use it to your advantage.

(And therefore got us to make a video about things we can't even see. NICE ONE, KEVIN)

Because film is mostly seen as a visual medium, we can often overlook how much film deliberately uses sound to communicate information, story, and tone-- and not only that, we often take for granted how sound fills in, expands and transforms the film beyond the frame, outside of what we actually see. In this essay, Kevin shows us how how off-screen sound can help with world building, creating tone, progress the story, and convey action.
